It will not be long before we can all choose to remain in this life indefinitely. Dying as we know it will be a distant memory. We will forever marvel at how much we humans were able to accomplish in so little time. The Einsteins, the Mozarts – how did they do it? Funny thing is, just as we seem to be reaching the precipice into this new frontier, people themselves have become more and more uninteresting; sitting in front of their mind-numbing TVs , computers and mobile what’s-its, enduring commercials that will have them buying shit they don’t need.
Parents are retarded. Their children are brats, wasting space and oxygen and should be put out of their misery. It’s a shame that Einstein will not be here for the coming years, but that guy that cut you off in traffic this morning will.
Not too long ago, I was out surfing. It was a calm morning as I sat alone on my board waiting for an outside swell, enjoying the peace. The fins came rushing up out of the water so fast I had no time to think. They surrounded me. I was terrified. I was relieved to see they were dolphins! But I was still a bit shaken, especially when they started whooshing around me and flying up over me. I thought maybe they were a hostile variety, and soon they would start ramming me.
A large swell was approaching. I thought, what the hell, may as well try to have some fun. I took off on the wave and to my surprise so did they! We were surfing together. At the time I didn’t know this was possible. I thought I was the first person to be surfing with dolphins! We continued surfing together for about an hour. It was the most beautiful experience of my life. Saying goodbye was difficult. I wanted it to last forever.
I know the experience I had with the dolphins can be represented by numbers and calculations. I know that soon all the details of the event can be extracted and stored then recreated or simulated again and again. Someday we will miss the days when we actually did things.
In the future our real bodies will be perfectly fit all the time, endowed with the finest toys gene engineers can offer.
We will not all look the same however, as we will be able to change our appearance at will. Until of course it becomes illegal to do so. Hell, Aubrey might finally shave off that ridicules beard! We will all spend most of our time in virtual worlds. Worlds that will not be easily discerned from our current perception on reality. We will clone ourselves as well as lost loved ones, so that they might live again, kind of.
After some time we will be able to defy gravity, transport ourselves using only thought, disassemble and reassemble our bodies at will – an endless amount of special effects! It will all seem like magic.
But the best part of this not so distant future is having the ability to back everything up!
That’s right; we will be able to store what we now call our mind, conscience, essence, whatever, onto life packets. Replicate and keep them at several locations for safe keeping. Even off planet. So when our being’s hardware crashes, we can simply reinstall elsewhere. Magic!
As we graduate into these trans-biological beings, it will become very difficult to actually kill somebody. Which sucks, cause Justin beeber and katee perry have got to go!
Course the obvious questions are, when will this all happen and will this fun stuff be available to all of us or only the very rich? If you think like Ray Kurzweil, all this technology is just around the corner; 15 or 20 years. Technological change is exponential. IC chips are becoming maddeningly zippy! In just a few decades, the intelligence of machines will exceed human intelligence. A new era of human change is about to begin. If you are juan of those people sitting around arguing or debating as to whether or not any of this is even possible, you’re already on the late show. It is not just possible, it is inevitable. History shows us clearly where we are going. The train has left the station, and there is no stopping it. Unless….
Well, I guess there are a few unless’s.
To name some:
– We are destroying the planet’s ability to support human life, and unless something truly dramatic happens soon, we will be over, and all this talk will be moot.
– An asteroid could end things as well. Given Nasa’s response to a recent unexpected near earth asteroid; “kind of crept up on us”, it would seem that Nasa is ill prepared for any future encounters.
– War, huh! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! But apparently we can’t seem to get enough of it.
It would seem that we are not happy unless we’re killing each other.
But I believe the number one reason that could bring technological advances to a grinding halt, is greed.
Or what I like to call, the jet engine stoppage.
To be continued…
